What a metal roof costs in Calgary
The City of Calgary’s climate guide puts steel at about 185% more than basic three-tab shingles and aluminum at about 215% more. A typical shingle replacement on a Calgary two-storey runs $5,000 to $15,000, and one Calgary homeowner reported a quote of about $30,000 for metal on a 1,700 sq ft two-storey.
Installed metal usually starts above
$10 a square foot
Even corrugated panels cost that much installed. Where your roof lands depends on:
- Size and pitch.
- How many valleys, dormers and penetrations need flashing.
- The metal and its gauge. Tin and aluminum come in thin, cheaper sheets. Steel, zinc and copper cost more.
- The paint or coating. Better finishes last longer and cost more.
- Whether the old roof comes off, and what the deck looks like underneath.
Compare quotes on the same metal, gauge and tear-off scope. Our roof replacement cost guide covers what moves the shingle number.

Types of metal roofing
Standing seam
Long panels with raised seams and hidden fasteners. It’s the most common choice, and it usually costs more than corrugated.
Steel or aluminum shingles
Lightweight metal pressed to look like shingles, and easy to find in Calgary. A good fit on a street where panels would stand out.
Corrugated steel
Lightweight panels with exposed fasteners, and the lower-cost option. You see it on shops, garages and commercial buildings.
Stone-coated metal
Metal with a stone finish, for a different look from bare panels.
Copper
It can last up to 80 years, but it’s rare in Calgary because of the install cost.
Hail and snow in Calgary
-
Hail dents metal
The City of Calgary says those dents don’t affect the roof underneath, and the roof keeps shedding water. Steel resists hail better than aluminum, and thicker panels dent less. Thin 29-gauge panels are behind most of the dented-roof stories you’ll read, while standing seam is commonly 24 or 26 gauge.
-
Dents and your insurance
Some policies treat dents on metal as cosmetic and exclude them. Ask your insurer before you choose metal, and ask how they handle colour matching if only some panels get replaced. We’ve documented more than 1,200 hail claims since 2014, so if a storm has already hit your roof, start with hail damage roof repair.
-
Snow lets go all at once
After a chinook, a whole sheet can slide off and land on your steps or walkway. Plan snow guards over doors, decks and the garage approach when you order the roof.
Is metal worth it on your house?
If you’ll stay for decades, it can be. Labour is the cost people forget. Replacing shingles every 20 years against metal every 50 or more can mean close to triple the labour over the life of the house. More than a few of our metal customers are people who’ve found their forever home here.
If you’ll sell in 10 years, most of the extra spend goes to the next owner, and metal shingles won’t suit every buyer’s taste. Good shingles are usually the better buy.
We install both, so we’ll tell you which one fits. Read metal roof vs shingles in Calgary for the full comparison, or see roof replacement if you’ve landed on shingles. On a commercial building, owners tend to think in decades, so metal often makes more sense there. See commercial roofing in Calgary.

Metal roof questions
How much does a metal roof cost in Calgary?
Installed metal usually starts above $10 a square foot, even for corrugated. Steel costs about 185% more than basic three-tab shingles, according to the City of Calgary, and aluminum about 215% more. Your written quote gives the exact price once we’ve seen the roof.
Does hail dent a metal roof?
It can. The dents don’t affect the roof underneath, according to the City of Calgary. Steel holds up better than aluminum, and thicker panels dent less.
Can a metal roof go over my old shingles?
It can, and lightweight corrugated panels suit it best. Going over shingles takes more labour and may need extra fasteners, supports or insulation, so it isn’t automatically cheaper. A full tear-off lets the crew check the plywood and lay new membrane at the eaves and valleys. Your quote will say which one you’re paying for.
Do metal roofs need maintenance?
Some. Check the seams and reseal them as needed, and look for dents or scratches after a hailstorm. It’s a lot less than the cost of replacing a roof.
Are metal roofs noisy?
Over a solid wood deck with an insulated attic above the ceiling, metal is much quieter than on an open shed. What sits between the metal and the room decides how loud it sounds.
Do I need snow guards?
Anywhere sliding snow could land on people or steps, yes. That usually means over doors, decks and the garage approach.
Can you put metal on a flat roof?
Metal panels need slope to shed water. For a flat roof we install torch-on, TPO and EPDM. See flat roofing in Calgary.
